Tandem Bikes are two-seater bicycles, and although not as common, tandems are also available in a three seater as well.

With a tandem bike, each rider works equally to propel the bike, as one long chair runs through both sets of pedals to drive the rear wheel.

Here are the three most common reasons that a cyclist or cyclists chose to ride a tandem bike over a solo bike:

1. Couples that enjoy riding together but who have different levels of strength and stamina chose a tandem bike because it forces compromise in riding speeds and allows them to always be together or to keep up with the group.

2. A person with a disability who cannot ride a bike on their own would get all the benefits of cycling that they couldn't experience on their own. By riding with another cyclist who can take the lead and perhaps make any riding decisions, it also builds a relationship of trust and is a wonderful experience for the lead cyclist as well.

3. Young children of cyclists are not usually capable of keeping up with the adult and/or are not mature or experienced enough to handle traffic or road limitations. By riding a tandem the child gets the full benefit of cycling as well as learn the benefits of family activities.

The feel of riding on a tandem is different than riding solo. A tandem bike is considerably heavier, and has a much longer wheel base, therefore; practicing with your tandem partner on a quiet street or in a parking lot is highly suggested. Because of the size and weight of the bike, the cyclists need to practice stopping and also swinging wider around turns.

Also, tandems are considerably longer than a regular bike, so you won't be able to carry one on your car using a standard rear-mount or roof rack. With a tandem bike, you will probably need to buy a carrier as well.

Many of the tandem bikes available are in the range of $1500 or more. If this tandem bike is going to be the main bike for adults and they ride quite often year after year, it is important to ask questions and get a bike that handles heavier adults and heavy-duty cycling. This even applies to purchasing any single-use bicycle for any serious cyclists.

However, if used as a family cycle or with young children, there are many well-made tandem bikes or "cruiser" type tandems that are relatively inexpensive and are equally safe and comfortable as the more expensive versions.

Riding a tandem bike with a friend, mate or children is a wonderful bonding experience. You can visit parks and parts of your neighborhood and actually discuss what you see as you are riding. It can be a great learning experience for all the riders while gaining the emotional and physical benefits of cycling. With a little bit of practice, riding tandem can be mastered and open up a new world of cycling for many that would prefer the company or are not capable of riding alone.

Seriously, give it some thought - tandem biking may be the route for you. Happy Cycling!

Bmx Bikes

Groshan Fabiola asked:

BMX Bikes are bicycles designed specially for racing on hilly and sandy tracks. Apart from racing on undulating terrains, bikers also perform tricks on flat grounds, trails and wooden ramps. Not too long ago, bikes were manufactured with an assembled frame and fork, with two wheels and a seat. BMX bicycles originated in the state of California in the late 60’s, but it was not before the beginning of 1961, that the bikes achieved popularity, and the manufacturers began to produce bicycles frequently. BMX stunts and tricks are presently extremely popular among teenagers. There is a plethora of clubs and organizations where people can come and try their hands out on the BMX bicycles and practice the skills and tricks. With these early practices, the young bikers get acquainted with the possible problems that may occur during the ramp performances.

Tricks are definitely not easy for any biker. The stunts extremely tough to perform. One should go through tough rehearsals, in order to be completely ready. Some of the challenging tricks are like standing on the front pegs, and spinning the rest of the bike around. The really skillful bikers can even summersault in air. These tricks can be gripped after a long practice session. While riding the BMX bikes, you would need ample protection. You must protect your elbows, knees and most importantly your head with the helmet. If you are interested in having a first look at the toughest BMX competitions, then the X games on various sports channels can assist you.

The main features of a BMX bike are straight tubes, gusseted frames, reinforced handlebars, powerful mag wheels, long crankarms ,steel rims and coaster brakes.

The BMX bike producers manufacture bikes with light body. The body of a BMX bike is made of aluminum or chromium and molybdenum for frames and steel for the rims. Aluminum is used also for rims, freewheels and caliper brakes. The 24-inch versions of these bikes are called ‘cruisers’. The frames on BMX bicycles are made to be very light and maneuvered accordingly, therefore, it can weather the blows while racing and jumping. Furthermore, a light bike can save your minutes, in a tight fought BMX race.

The tiers of BMX bicycles are completely different from the road bikes. They are knobby with excellent traction and power. Another aspect that distinguishes the BMX tires from the others is the construction of their wheels. The rims are of 20 inches generally, but there can be different sizes as well.

From time to time the BMX bicycles fall hard on the ground, which is why the manufacturers have introduced ‘Cro Moly’ tube sets to the bikes. A BMX bike with smaller gear set-ups minimizes the weight of the bikes by using chain rings, smaller rear drivers, and shorter length of chain. BMX bicycles sales are much higher than the other ones. Bikes can be seen with every fashionable bike rider, on sidewalks and in their natural habitat. As opposed to competing, a simple ride would be much more comfortable. While riding, however, you have to be very conscious, and should not make too much experiments with your tricks. Don not forget to wear a helmet whenever riding. The BMX bicycles are both, fashionable and powerful, providing you the ultimate passion for fashionable biking.

Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

Alloy wheels are automobile wheels that are made from aluminum/magnesium/chrome metals that serve as the base alloys. These alloy wheels differ from normal steel vehicle's wheels, as they are lighter in weight. They improve the cars' performance by increasing their mileage. Alloys are also known for their heat conducting property that surpasses the steel wheels .This improves the overall heat dissipation of the brakes, thus reducing the chance of brake failures in extreme driving conditions.

These alloy wheels are also considered to be chic as they are not hidden behind the hubcaps. Thus they reduce weight of the car. However these alloy wheels are pricier than ordinary wheels making then slightly less palatable for general consumers.

Magnesium alloy wheels are also referred to as mag wheels , are sometimes used on racing cars, instead of the heavy steel or aluminum wheels as they give better weight reduction and acceleration. The wheels are formed in only one-step by hot forging from the magnesium alloys ZK60 and MA-14. The Russian variation of the ZK60 is used in this process. The disks made of cast magnesium are also used in dirt bike wheels. The weight of a typical magnesium automotive wheel is about eight-twelve kilo grams.

Magnesium wheels may be lighter than aluminum alloys but are easily flammable and are banned in some arenas of motor sports in the United Kingdom due to occurrences of fires. These fires are very difficult to extinguish and are really hazardous as they can become fatal for the driver. The fire initiates as and when the tire gets punctured and the wheel scrapes the rough road surface for a prolonged period. There are some variants of Magnesium alloy wheels available which may have low corrosion resistance.

These hazardous features of Mag Wheels along with being expensive make them impractical for usage in most common vehicles. Aluminum wheels are often popularly referred to as "mag wheels" and are preferred over the mag and chrome wheels.

Many wheel brands which include Panther Wheel, American Racing Wheels, Motegi Racing Performance Wheels, Weld Racing, BBS, 5Zigen, Volk Racing and Konig are known manufacturers of quality alloys. The aftermarket wheels have also been inundated with the vast incursion of reasonably priced chrome wheels from East Asia.

With India, investing in alloy wheels through Synergies Castings Ltd. and other companies - of late has also emerged as a leading supplier of chrome wheels. They are able to manufacture products to a universal scale due to the availability of cheap but highly trained and experienced labor. One of the oldest aftermarket wheel companies dating back to 1956 is the American Racing, which owns Motegi Racing and Weld Racing among other famous brands.

A recent trend in the manufacturing industries includes joint venture partnerships being shaped between offshore firms, local importers and distributors. These partnerships have initiated a stern competition between the giants of manufacturing and thus leading them to do an extensive R&D. This has left the market flooded with a vast collection of superior alloys to choose from, thus benefiting the car users.
